KARACHI: Biopics are a territory most fear to tread but the genre becomes even trickier to tackle with when exploring a personality as complex as Manto. At the curtain raiser of the upcoming eponymous film, Sarmad Sultan Khoosat, who’ll essay the role of Manto, shared his thoughts on the controversial writer and how much the role means to him.
“To think that Manto will benefit from this movie is wrong. It’s us who are benefitting from his timeless genius,” said Khoosat, who has also directed the posthumous film. “We’re only reproducing his writings and the stories he penned about what he thought was right,” he added. He shared he was more concerned about what the writer may have thought about the film than how people would perceive it. “It’s just like Manto’s quote ‘Saadat Hasan mar jayega, Manto zinda rahega’.”

Khoosat described the opportunity to depict the character as “a chance of a lifetime.” Having read several of Manto’s afsanas, he revealed his personal favourite. “I think all of Manto’s writings give you goosebumps, but there are a few stories that one, [as a filmmaker], feels would translate well cinematically. For me, that’s Khol Do.”

Shahid Nadeem, the screenwriter of the project, also shared his views on the enigmatic writer, noting how there are only a few writers such asManto, who possess sensitivity, a craft and political awareness. “With the passage of time, I feel Manto’s stature is only increasing,” he stated.

Although Manto’s writings have previously been adapted for stage and television, Nadeem said the film would stand out in how it also explores the writer’s personal life. “You’ll see Manto for the human that he was. We have shown his personal life, struggles and suffering in the movie.”

Khoosat as Manto in the film

Boasting an ensemble cast with actors, the film will see Sania Saeed, Saba Qamar, Shamoon Abbassi, Humayun Saeed, Faisal Qureshi, Mahira Khan and Azfar Mustafa play prominent roles. The recurrent ‘bad guy’ of Pakistani cinema, Abbasi, who makes an appearance through the short story Thanda Gosht in the film, sang praises of Khoosat and his fellow cast members.

Only given a day’s notice before he was called to the sets, he recalled how he only had a few hours to rehearse for the character of the Sikh he plays in the movie. “It was an emergency shoot, so I’m hoping it went well,” stated Shamoon.

The organisers also took the opportunity to preview Manto’s soundtrack, which features songs, such as Kaun Hai Ye Gustakh by Javed Bashir,Kya Hoga by Zeb Bangash, and Mehram Dilaan De Maahi by Meesha Shafi, and Aah Ko Chahiye by Ali Sethi.

While announcing the release date for Manto, Nadeem said, “September 11 is viewed as a tragic date in history, as it’s remembered for Quaid-e-Azam death and the World Trade Centre incident. But now, it’ll be remembered for a good thing — the launch of Manto the movie.”

Aren’t we all just crazy about handbags? Especially with the inception of online shopping we can get any designer bag in any part of the world.

And we ladies do not mind paying exorbitant amounts of money for it because we know that money invested in a good bag is never a bad investment.

But what if you find out that the branded bag you recently ordered online is not authentic and you have been duped!

According to KIIS 1065, Jackie, an Australian RJ recently sold a Givenchy handbag she’d bought online on eBay.

You can imagine her surprise when the buyer got in touch with her and asked her if she knew that the handbag was in actual fact, fake!

Shocked, Jackie realised she had been duped! She returned the buyer’s money and got the bag back so that she could look into the authenticity issue.

Jack called in Jane from authenticity specialists Blue Spinach on air to help Jackie with the matter.

It turned out Jackie’s bag was a fake!

So we don’t want you to go through the same thing as Jackie did so here is what to look out for so you know how to spot a fake:

1. Check the name plate

The little name plate on the inside could be a good indicator, simply make sure the designer name plate looks of a good quality. For e.g. check that the spelling is correct, the engraving is straight.

2. Look at the overall quality

Check out the lining of the bag, is it of a good quality? Is the way its stiched in satisfactory?
Couturier, Hasan Sheheryar Yasin (HSY) has cut the ribbon on his very own, one of a kind talent hunt, seeking fresh, new faces to add value to his brand. HSY just launched the ‘#CastMeHSY Campaign,’ opening up his studios to the general public.

Through this campaign, HSY hopes to cultivate modeling in Pakistan. “It is an extension of the brand – a way of giving back to my fans for supporting me through 20 years in the fashion industry,” HSY said in an interview with The Express Tribune. “With this new venture, the HSY team hopes to provide a platform for new talent and discover exciting new people with the potential to become supermodels of tomorrow,” he added.

Yet another fragment of HSY’s online lifestyle portal, The World of HSY, the ‘#CastMeHSY’ campaign has cleverly collaborated and social media websites Twitter and Instagram to entice the ambitious youth of Pakistan. It openly invites them to upload full-length photographs of themselves attributed to the given hashtag so that HSY and his team can view them. These photographs will then be reviewed and the most promising candidates shortlisted for upcoming shoots of the brand. The more coveted prize, however, would be a spot in the HSY display at the PFDC L’Oreal Bridal Week to be held next month.

What sets the campaign apart from other modeling competitions is that it doesn’t cater to a particular gender or age bracket, allowing men and women from across the country to participate. “As a team, we want to make The World of HSY accessible to more and more people,” explained HSY when asked about the inspiration behind this venture. “Just a few weeks ago, we launched the HSY Limited clothing line for a new, predominantly younger target market. With this campaign, we are simply taking things up a notch, opening up the brand and connecting with our fans. The future of the campaign is yet to be determined, seeing as how it has barely been two days since it was launched but HSY and his team hopes to make it an annual feature. “Everything is contingent upon how it is received by our patrons,” shared HSY. “So far, the response has been positive but lets see.”

Published in The Express Tribune, August 6th, 2015.

It’s owned by the team that introduced Chinese restaurant Yum and café English Tea House to Lahore and it seems they know how to cater to popular taste. Lahore sorely lacked an upscale Pakistani restaurant and Spice Bazaar attempts to fill that void. The space has roped in Chef Akhtar Rehman, who’s a well-known name in culinary circles along with architect Masood Ali Khan to design the restaurant. The Express Tribune took a trip to the restaurant to see if the food lives up to the hype surrounding it.

The paneer tikka from the appetisers section was dry and chewy. The restaurant boasts a vast menu, out of which we ordered the tawa chicken, nihari, malai boti and palak paneer. The tawa chicken was anything but ordinary. Its aroma coupled with the hit of green chilies aptly puts the ‘spice’ in Spice Bazaar. The nihari and malai boti lacked in the flavour department. Their palak paneer, however, was outstanding – slow-cooked to perfection with a harmony of flavours. This paired with one of their many varieties of naan was a total knockout. They also had a ‘Qehwa khaana’, which had an assortment of teas one could indulge in after the meal. Their gulab jamans, another recommendation by the chef, are worth a special mention.

The middle of the restaurant area has a courtyard with a fountain, and their ‘Qehwa khana’ is placed in a cozy corner on the other end.

Every item on the table was served in a different kind of serving platter or dish in accordance with its requirements. This added to the grandeur and beauty of the table.

Service 5/5

Although the food is above average, it’s the impeccable service that would, perhaps, drive us to visit the restaurant again. The staff at Spice Bazaar is well-trained, friendly and well-informed, going out of their way to ensure the customers’ comfort. They’re attentive and accommodating with enthusiasm, which adds to the overall experience of the meal.

Verdict: A welcome addition to Lahore’s desi dining scene, Spice Bazaar has a myriad of things to offer. Developing a menu this vast in just over a month into its initiation is worth lauding. Still in its nascent stage, the dishes are not as top-notch as one would expect them to be. Sustain their service and ambiance, and improving food quality could take them a long way.

This forced him to approach the government in New Delhi with the request to legalise his stay in the country.

“I’m very thankful to the Indian government for considering my plea.
While a redesign is not expected and the new model may resemble the iPhone 6, many enhancements to the existing features are expected in the upcoming phone which according to some reports may be called the iPhone 6S or iPhone 7.

Here’s a list of some of the expected upgrades in the new iPhone:

Better Camera

“I'll have one more Test and that will be the end of my career,” Clarke said.

“I'm retiring from international cricket. I certainly don't want to jump ship and leave the boys now, so I'll play the last test at The Oval, give it one last crack, but the time is right now.

“You never want to walk away from the game but I think my performances in this series and the last 12 months have not been acceptable to me.

“I pride myself on leading from the front, so that's been disappointing. You build yourself up for the big series, the big tournaments. One-day cricket is about the World Cup and Test cricket is about the Ashes.”

For Clarke, it was a bittersweet way to end his career.

Earlier this year, he was on top of the world, leading Australia to an emotional victory in the World Cup final on home soil.

The signs were already there. Plagued by a hamstring injury, he had almost missed the World Cup but made it back just in time and played a starring role in the final, top-scoring with 74 in what was his last one-day International.

He was tempted to quit then but the lure of the Ashes was too much. Clarke said he would continue playing tests but his lean run with the bat, coupled with losing the Ashes, convinced him it was time to give it up, even if it was not the ending he wanted.

“Now it's time for the next generation of players, the next captain to have his opportunity to try and build the team and get them ready for the next Ashes series,” he said.

“I've been lucky enough to play over 100 Test matches for Australia.

“I've always said the game owes me nothing, I owe it everything. I'm thankful I've been able to play it for so long.”
Polarising figure

At times a polarising figure in cricket-mad Australia, Clarke made his test debut against India in 2004, scoring a hundred in his first innings.

Clarke, who hails from Sydney's working-class western suburbs, took over as Australian Test captain in 2011 and a year later he scored his first triple century.

In 2013-14, he led Australia to a 5-0 cleansweep at home to regain the Ashes but the first signs that things were starting to fall apart came last summer when he hurt his hamstring playing against India.

Troubled by hamstring and back issues since he was a teenager, Clarke retired from the match and did not play again during the series.

Still mourning the death of his team mate and close friend Phillip Hughes, he hinted that he might walk away from the game.

He briefly changed his mind but not his form and the pressure started to build.

Clarke joined a long list of Australian captains whose last year in the job has been a constant struggle after the emergence of a natural successor.

In Clarke's case, his replacement as skipper will be Steve Smith, who led the team against India and has already been appointed as ODI captain.

Smith, who will become Australia's youngest Test captain since Kim Hughes, has been on a golden run of form with the bat, including a double century in the second Ashes test at Lord's.

No meat, eggs or dairy – nothing that comes from animals. Is there anything interesting left to eat? Yes, there’s lots – according to vegans – including chickpeas, kidney beans, fortified soy products, fruit and nuts. So this week’s research linking vegan diet and weight loss is a triumph for the tofu burger. Vegetarian diets have previously been linked with a reduced risk of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease and dying from pretty much everything. But, more importantly – at least as far as summer magazine issues go – vegan diets haven’t been strongly linked with weight loss. This is partly because studies on weight loss and varities of vegetarianism have been small, lasted varying amounts of time and the subjects studied haven’t stuck to their diets.

The solution

This new study, a meta analysis published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, adds up the results of the best studies that compare weight loss in vegetarian and non-vegetarian diets, and also lacto-ovo vegetarians (who drink milk and eat eggs) and vegans. The studies included 1,151 dieters who had followed a regime for between nine and 74 weeks. The diets included the Atkins diet and those recommended by the American Diabetes Association and the US National Cholesterol Education Program. Those who followed a vegetarian diet lost an average of 1.48kg more than those on other diets, while vegans lost 2.52kg more than the non-vegetarian dieters. The lead author, Ru-Yi Huang, says that wholegrain products that are rich in fibre may cause the stomach to delay in emptying and therefore delay feelings of hunger. Some of the individual pieces of research within the meta analysis had more dramatic evidence of weight loss – one study found a weight loss of 10kg at a year and 8kg at five years in vegetarians. A study in BMJ Open of 39 overweight people found that an “Eco-Atkins diet” – a low-carbohydrate vegan diet (with protein from soy and nut products) – led to 6.9kg weight loss over six months as well as lower cholesterol levels.

The British Dietetic Association says that vegetarian and vegan diets are suitable for every stage of life as long as they are well planned. There are many ways to lose weight, all of which involve eating less or at least expending more energy than you take in. Becoming a vegan is usually a lifestyle choice rather a diet – one that people make for many reasons, and feeling better in a two-piece is perhaps not the most common one.

Of course not. That’s for old people. The whole point of being young is to drink and eat what you want and not worry. When you get to 30, then you’ll start being healthy. But it seems even 30 may be too late to prevent your arteries getting narrowed and damaged. A study in this month’s Journal of the American College of Cardiology found that young adults who continually had blood pressure at the high end of the normal range were more likely to show signs of heart problems in middle age. The researchers, fromJohns Hopkins University in the US, followed 2,479 men and women whose ages ranged from 18 to 30, over 25 years. They measured their blood pressure, and used speckle tracking echocardiography (a specialised ultrasound technique) to look for heart damage.

High blood pressure is often a silent condition, discovered by a routine check. Grade-one high blood pressure is over 140/90, and 20-30% of people with it don’t know they’ve got it. What this study shows is that young people with blood pressure at the high end of the normal range increase their risk of heart damage 25 years later. The study showed that, in this group, the left ventricle had to work harder to generate the movement to push blood out of the heart round the body. This structural change in the heart chamber is one step along the way to the ventricle getting bigger and stiffer. High blood pressure has no upsides. It can causes heart attacks, heart and/or kidney failure, strokes and dementia. So should you take more care of yourself from an earlier age?

The solution

The study did not follow people through to see if they actually had the strokes and heart attacks that seemingly loomed over them: it didn’t have what doctors call clinical endpoints. But Dr Sadia Khan, a consultant cardiologist at West Middlesex hospital, says that it confirms what doctors have been saying for some time. “The choices that people make now will have a big influence on their future wellbeing,” she says. The traditional view that the effects of high blood pressure only occur when you’re older is now debunked.

This doesn’t mean that young people with higher but still normal blood pressures need tablets – they don’t. What it means is that all of us (including children) should do what Nice recommends – exercise, reduce salt intake, maintain an ideal weight for your height and eat healthily. Alcohol can raise blood pressure and should be drunk in moderation. Don’t wait until middle age, when some damage is already done, to start trying to reduce your risk.

Interestingly but not surprisingly, no Pakistani actor made the cut. The only name that comes to mind who could have possibly be included is Fawad Khan but how much he earns has always been an ambiguous matter.

Long way to go

Let's be honest: If notable big stars like Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan are missing, the chances of Fawad being on it are a case of us being delusional and hopeful.

The Pakistani film industry might be going through a revival but it'll be years, maybe decades, before we get to the level where homegrown talent and movies make millions of dollars.

For now, the only way a local actor could even dream of being on the list is by taking the Chan route, that is to make your name so huge that you could slap it on anything and people will buy it for a steep amount.

Jackie's wealth comes from him selling branded merchandise and he also owns a Segway dealership, as well as a cinema chain.

Grady Hendrix, cofounder of the New York Asian Film Festival says, “Jackie Chan is basically the Mickey Mouse of Chinese culture, a celebrity who is so omnipresent that his name has become shorthand.”

Other actors on the list were Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, as well as Adam Sandler, despite a dry box office run.

The full list is as follows:
The list in full:

Robert Downey Jr: $108.4m

Jackie Chan: $67.8m

Vin Diesel: $63.7m

Bradley Cooper: $56.2m

Adam Sandler: $55.6m

Tom Cruise: $54.3m

Amitabh Bachchan and Salman Khan: $45.4m

Akshay Kumar: $44m

Mark Wahlberg: $43.4m

Dwayne Johnson: $42.7m

Johnny Depp: $40.7m

Leonardo DiCaprio: $39.3m

Channing Tatum: $37.9m

Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Craig: $36.6m

Matthew McConaughey: $35.9m

Shah Rukh Khan and Will Smith: $35.2m

Matt Damon: $33.8m

Hugh Jackman: $31.2m

Ben Affleck and Liam Neeson: $26.4m

Chow Yun-fat and Russell Crowe: $24.4m

Seth Rogen: $23m

George Clooney: $22.4m

Brad Pitt and Jonah Hill: $21.7m

Will Ferrell and Ranbir Kapoor: $20.3m

Chris Evans: $18.3m

Chris Pratt and Andy Lau: $17.6m

Tanveer on Tuesday announced to defer the Aug 7 strike for a month following an assurance by the finance minister that the issues pertaining to surcharge in electricity bills, innovative taxes and the Gas Infrastructure Develop-ment Cess (GIDC) will be resolved by Aug 31.

The resolution of the issues will ease a burden of Rs175 billion on the sector annually.

“We will call another general body meeting on Sept 4 to decide about our strategy with regard to strike, if government fails to resolve issues,” Tanveer told reporters.

He said the association decided to defer the strike on the request of the finance minister who constituted four committees to resolve issues pertaining to the ministry of commerce, the ministry of water and power, the ministry of oil and gas and the Federal Board of Revenue.

Tanveer said that the association members had given him the mandate to defer the strike till Sept 4.

He said the standing committee on textile had also endorsed the viewpoint of the textile industry when the latter made a presentation on industry issues. Textile mills, he said, are being closed down due to wrong policies of the government.

Tanveer said the government over-burdened the textile industry by introducing GIDC worth Rs38bn, electricity surcharge worth Rs78bn and innovative taxes worth Rs65bn.

“Why textile industry should pay extra taxes to cover up inefficiencies of power sector, like theft, line losses and short recoveries,” Tanveer said, adding that the government first pay circular debt by taking credit from banks and later put it on the textile industry after converting the interest into surcharge.

He said the industry could not afford Rs14.5 per unit electricity tariff, which is almost double the price being charged in China, India and Bangladesh.

He said the textile millers were unable to bear this burden and compete in the region as textile industry which had capacity to produce products worth $3.4bn was at the verge of closure.

The association chairman said that between 2006 and 2013 Vietnam raised textile exports by 230pc, Bangladesh 160pc, China 97pc and India 94pc while Pakistan made a mere growth of 22pc, which was even less than the world average of 44pc.

He said that the viability of the textile industry had been challenged because of undue burden, and jobs of 15 million workers are at stake.

He said Pakistan added only one million spindles of cotton from 2009 to 2014 as against China adding 35m, Bangladesh 1.9m. China set up 300,000 looms, India 36,000, Bangladesh 22,000 while Pakistan set up only 1,319 looms during the last five years.

He was 85.

Michael Selleck, a longtime friend and an executive at Simon & Schuster, said Mr. Scaasi died of cardiac arrest at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center shortly before 2 a.m.

“I am definitely not a minimalist!” Mr. Scaasi once declared, acknowledging his fondness for bright colors, prints and embellishments like ruffles, bows, bugle beads, fur, feathers, fringe and paillettes. “Clothes with some adornment are more interesting to look at and more fun to wear.”

The proprietor of a long-running atelier in Midtown Manhattan, Mr. Scaasi was known for bringing the techniques of the French couture to prominent American women. Among them were Barbra Streisand, who wore a sheer, sequined, broadly bell-bottomed pantsuit designed by Mr. Scaasi to the 1969 Academy Awards, and Barbara Bush, who appeared in a puffy-shouldered blue velvet Scaasi gown for the presidential inauguration of her husband, George Bush, 20 years later.

Mr. Scaasi also designed formal wear for the first ladies Mamie Eisenhower, Hillary Clinton and Laura Bush. Joan Crawford, Joan Rivers, Elizabeth Taylor, Diahann Carroll and Mary Tyler Moore were all “Scaasi Girls,” as his most devoted clients were called. Ms. Moore appeared in a well-known ad campaign called “Me and My Scaasi.” He also made clothes for the sculptor Louise Nevelson, a close friend; flocks of debutantes; and even an order of nuns.

One of his longest collaborations was with Ms. Streisand. It was he who designed the pantsuit, famous for its translucency and billowing legs, that she tripped on en route to the Oscar stage in 1969 to accept the best actress award for “Funny Girl.” He also created some of her costumes for the 1970 film adaptation of the musical “On a Clear Day You Can See Forever,” in which she starred.

Diminutive and dapper, recognizable by his generous swoop of hair, Mr. Scaasi mixed easily with both the swans of high society and the pillars of Washington.

One of his deep regrets, he wrote in a 2004 memoir, “Women I Have Dressed (and Undressed!),” was asking Jacqueline Kennedy to pay wholesale for frocks he had designed on spec for her when she entered the White House in 1961, rather than giving them to her in exchange for the publicity. “That was probably the dumbest decision I ever made in my life!” he wrote.

Mrs. Kennedy made Oleg Cassini her official designer.

It was a rare diplomatic misstep. Mr. Scaasi was known for his solicitude with clients, allowing them to weigh in on necklines and sleeve lengths, for example, or ensuring that they did not show up at events wearing the same dress as someone else. On request he handed over the pattern for a belted midi-length jumper to the mother superior of an order of Catholic nuns in Pittsburgh (though not without thinking, as he wrote in his memoir, “Lady, do you ever have chutzpah!”). He was also adept at public relations, knowing how to work the news media by meting out details of his clients’ design choices before a big event.

One client and close friend was the gossip columnist Liz Smith, with whom he and Parker Ladd, a retired publishing executive and his partner of more than 50 years, long presided over the Literacy Partners Gala at Lincoln Center, a grand fund-raiser for adult-literacy programs.

He was born Arnold Isaacs in Montreal on May 8, 1930. He later reversed the spelling of his last name at the suggestion of the interior decorator Robert Denning, whom he had met while contributing clothes to a General Motors ad campaign in 1954.

His father, Samuel, was a furrier and his mother, Bessie, had studied opera; one of his earliest memories, he said, was ordering her to pin a corsage of gardenias on her evening bag rather than wear it on her shoulder. It was his glamorous Aunt Ida Wynn who inspired him to go into fashion, he said; she would visit the family with trunks full of Chanel and Schiaparelli dresses.

He attended the Cotnoir-Capponi school in Montreal, spending his last year at the Chambre Syndicale in Paris, and then apprenticed there at the house of Paquin before applying for a job with Christian Dior. Dior promised him a job in three months, but Mr. Scaasi was impatient, and when Dior hemmed and hawed, as Mr. Scaasi recalled, Dior said: “Why don’t you bring fashion to America? America is the future.”

So he moved to New York, working briefly under Charles James before going out on his own in 1956. Two years later, he won the Coty Award for greatest achievement in creative design by an American. By 1960 he had set up shop in a Stanford White townhouse at 56th Street near Fifth Avenue.

Mr. Scaasi’s success in the United States was built on essentially dressing women for the ballroom. While he dabbled in ready-to-wear and introduced many licenses for accessories, men’s wear and perfume, his skills in made-to-order were the center of his business, which relied on a clientele with plenty of money and leisure time. In the 1980s his reputation was recharged when the society figures Gayfryd Steinberg and Nan Kempner gravitated (or should one say levitated) to his aesthetic.

His designs drew generously from the past, often incorporating into his silhouettes castoff embellishments like peplums and petticoats. Many designers returned to a version of the 1950s-style pouf, or bubble skirt, in the late 1980s; Mr. Scaasi’s double-layered version was called, with a nod to Marie Antoinette, a “brioche.”

The average woman may not have had use for such fripperies, nor been able to afford them, but actresses and singers were drawn to Mr. Scaasi’s flamboyance. He began his work with show business personalities in 1955 by designing for Arlene Francis, the actress and panelist on the game show “What’s My Line?” He later designed for Joan Crawford when she was making public appearances for Pepsi, and for Claudette Colbert, Sophia Loren and Natalie Wood.

Mr. Scaasi had homes in Manhattan; Palm Beach, Fla.; and Quogue, on Long Island, sharing them with Mr. Ladd, whom he met at a dinner party in 1962. In July 2011 they held a lavish celebration at Le Cirque in Manhattan to celebrate their long relationship. Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Martha Stewart were among the guests. Mr. Scaasi and Mr. Ladd were married that September.

“We had a long haul,” Mr. Ladd, his only immediate survivor, said in a telephone interview on Tuesday, attributing their success in love to “sheer enjoyment of each other’s personalities.”

In 1996, Mr. Scaasi was honored by the Council of Fashion Designers of America with a Lifetime Achievement Award in a ceremony that also presented him with an opportunity to display his characteristic aplomb.

“The minute he stepped on stage, these fur activists started shrieking, and he just stood there until there was a lull,” recalled Simon Doonan of Barneys, who was in the audience. “And then he said, very calmly, ‘Well, I guess those weren’t Scaasi Girls.’ ”

Correction: August 5, 2015
An earlier version of this obituary misstated the name of a fund-raising event over which Mr. Scaasi and others presided. It is the Literacy Partners Gala, not the Literary Partners Gala. The earlier version also omitted part of the name of an organization that honored Mr. Scaasi in 1996. It is the Council of Fashion Designers of America, not the Council of Fashion Designers.

Angry Birds was a worldwide success after its release in 2009, but the game started losing its appeal in 2013 and Rovio is now trying to swoop back from a sharp drop in profits.

The game is available on both Android and iOS.

Earnings before interest and tax slumped to $11 million last year from $40.2 million in 2013. Last December Rovio cut around 110 jobs, almost one in six of its workforce, and shut down its game development unit in Finland. In 2014, Rovio’s overall sales fell by nine per cent, even though income generated by new versions of the gaming app grew by 16%.

Rovio said the game’s visuals and gameplay have been overhauled for the sequel. “Design technology has evolved dramatically since the original game launched in 2009.
